The Totes 731 umbrella [UPC 022653168616] has what appears to be a fiberglass center shaft and appears sturdy, operates smoothly, and was not bothered by the minor breezes to which it has so far been subjected. The documentation included specifies that the umbrella is not to be returned to the point of purchase. It has a lifetime replacement warranty for manufacturing defects that costs $5 plus shipping of the failed umbrella.
The actual dimensions I measured are:
with the umbrella open;
forty-eight inches measured from the fabric half way between the support spokes straight across
fifty-two inches measured from the fabric at the support spokes straight across
fifty-three inches measured from the tip of the support spokes straight across
with the umbrella closed, neatly folded, and with the velcro straps securely fastened;
thirty inches measured from the anchor point on the shaft to the fabric at the support spoke
Since manufacturers use the largest dimension available, thirty inches times two (both sides of the support post) is sixty inches. The shorter dimensions are due to the curve imposed by the support spokes. There is approximately 1963 square inches of actual coverage versus approximately 2827 square inches of fabric.
Having read the reviews, you may wish to consider going to your local brick and mortar store to avoid the customer service issues related in the posts. I presume most stores that sell clothing will sell you an umbrella. Look for 'golf sized'.
The only down side is that the tip of the umbrella is soft and is easily damaged. This is not an issue of you do not use it as a walking stick or strike it against hard surfaces. It seems to be sturdy enough for this use, but consider getting a tip guard of some sort before employing it in this fashion. Also consider that damage caused by using it for any purpose other than as an umbrella may not be covered by the Totes warranty.
