Take my advice and ignore the quibblers. I own three of these umbrellas -- one in each size from the collapsible briefcase model to the XL. My everyday umbrella is this "XL" model, in shiny silver (a color now apparently unavailable in the US). It is not "flimsy." It is not "off kilter." Is it quirky? Yes. Does it have two tie straps instead of one? Yes. Does that matter at all? Absolutely not.
I have carried my Senz XL through three long, dreary, windy and rainy years of Seattle area weather -- which means about nine months per annum of near-continuous drizzle, punctuated frequently by torrential cloudbursts and 50 mile per hour wind gusts. I cannot tell you how many times I have powered through unimaginable rainstorms with my Senz umbrella, watching as the folks around me struggle in futility with utterly useless umbrellas that are torn, inside out, collapsed.
Three years later, my Senz takes a licking and keeps on ticking. We just had one of the most miserable weeks of rain and wind in Seattle history -- and that's saying something. No umbrella can keep you completely dry under those conditions, but this one worked as well as any umbrella could, and not once was it ever in danger of being wind damaged.
The swept wing shape resists the wind. It also diverts water away from your back, avoiding one of the classic disadvantages of all but the most enormous ordinary round umbrellas -- a sluice of water rolling off the umbrella and down the back of your sportcoat and thence down the back of your pants.
Sure, you have to open and close two velcro ties to open or stow your umbrella. Good grief, think you can do that, or is it too much heavy lifting for you? Of course you can do it, in exchange for which you will have an umbrella that lasts for years, keeps you dry, and will not give up the ghost when you most need it -- when the wind whips up to 20, 30, 40 or even 50 miles per hour. Your umbrella will come with a nifty 'sock' that you can slide over the umbrella when it is closed, giving you a very neat looking and very slender package.
I owned dozens of umbrellas before I discovered Senz -- cheap ones, expensive ones, small ones, big ones. You can pay $100 and up for a very fancy walking stick with a canopy on top (and I did so). That $100 will be gone in a heartbeat when the right gust of wind comes along, and you'll be standing there getting drenched with the remains of your hundred bucks in your hand. The Senz umbrella will see you through; while the others will fail you when you most need them.
Added bonus -- you will strike up conversation with lots and lots of folks who stop to ask about that slick looking thing you're carrying in the rain and who will want to know where to get one of their own.
So be bold. Buy one.
